Martin Tomitsch


Dr Martin Tomitsch is a Professor of Interaction Design and Director of the Urban Interfaces group at the University of Sydney Design Lab, which is located in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning. He is also the Director of Innovation (Education – Entrepreneurship and Engagement) at the University of Sydney’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Office, and co-founder of the Austrian Network for Information and Communication Technologies for Development ( and the global Media Architecture Institute ( He holds a visiting professorship in media architecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Visual Art Innovation Institute in Beijing. He teaches courses on interaction design, user experience design, design thinking, creativity and innovation. His research investigates the interaction between people and future technologies, with a particular focus on citizens and communities, autonomous mobility and new approaches for considering non-human stakeholders in the interaction design. His recent books include “Making Cities Smarter” (published by Jovis) which introduces user-experience design principles to smart cities and “Design Think Make Break Repeat” (published by BIS) which is a handbook of design methods, now available as a revised edition after having sold over 12,000 copies.
