Gernot Tscherteu

Social designer and researcher at realitylab.at. With a background in political science, Gernot has worked for the Austrian Academy of Science, University of Applied Arts, ZKM Karlsruhe, and the Vienna Museumsquarter. He has curated numerous events in the field of media facades and media architecture. Gernot is co-founder of the Media Architecture Institute and the Media Architecture Biennale series.


His firm realitylab is designing social processes in housing and urban development processes with a focus on self-organisation and community building. realitylab has supported about 10 co-housing projects and and around 20 funded housing projects with a total of more than 5000 apartments. Its aim is to form neighbourhoods that share common rooms, vehicules and other resources. In many cases digital tools are an important part of the project infrastructure that are to be designed and implemented along with social process that is based on participation and empowerment.
